Amal 276 repair or replace

Hi all

I have an A10 plunger currently fitted with a 928 concentric which was fitted to replace a badly leaking 276 by the PO. The problem with the concentric is that the top of the carb is almost touching the frame which forces the cables to bend at an acute angle causing throttle to stick intermittently. I was given the 276 in a box of bits and I was wondering if Amal do a refurbishment service or if it would be better to either replace the concentric with a new 276 or if perhaps a monobloc might be a better fit.

Your 276 carb will be a bitza, and it is difficult (impossible?) to ensure that all the parts are correct, as the parts from other carbs (type 6) will fit but the galleries, hole alignment, float heights etc will not be correct.  If you have the funds, a brand new one from Amal will save problems caused by carb errors (which then lead you down the path of frigging ignition settings to get it to run).

Pretty sure that Amal doesn't make the correct R.H. 276 carb for the A10.

Hi All,
I have found that the new 276 type carbs run very lean???
Its as if the pilot drillings are too small ???
same issues with most concentrics (havnt tried the new ones yet with removable jet)
Has anyone tried one of the "wassell" concentric copies ???

My carb man makes new oversize slides

Hi Guys

  Sorry for not replying sooner but I have (sort of) solved the problem. Phil Beresford in Amal sent me a couple of suggestions including drilling out the top of the 928 to allow a slightly longer run which I did and it made a huge improvemrnt allowing the cables a straight drop into the carb which sorted the sticking throttle problem. However the present setup seems to run rich as the plugs are constantly black even though the bike runs reasonably well. He suggested that a 26mm 600 series concentric might be the way to go. Has anybody used this configuration on a plunger?.

It sounds to me as if the float (fuel) height is high, this is usually the only way they are rich across the range
Float height is the first and most important thing to check when setting up a carb

   Thanks for the link, worth trying but I think that the 928 is less than suitable so I've sent off the 276 to your carb man for overhaul. He said that it would be 3/4 weeks so I'll let you know what happens.

Hey Trev,

Actually, Amal replied to my inquiry that the new (older versions too?) 276 carb float bowls can be moved to R & L side applications making for an awesome looking install.  Now if I can get them to run right and match up the throats in the carbs, manifolds, heat block, and head.
