Cam swap?
« on: 25.05. 2011 15:22 »
My cam is fairly shagged, and in need of either repair or replacement.
My question is, can I fit a cam from a later A7 or A10 in my '48 longstroke motor?
Obviously, the part numbers differ, but the bushes are the same diameter, so are they interchangeable?
The reason I ask is that the later cams seem to be much more easily available than the early ones, and I don't have a later cam to compare with mine.
Thanks chaps.

Jack,
The later cam is completely different and will not fit.
If you can't get another cam you will have to get yours built up and ground.
This seems to be a common fault with these cams.
I have several and only one is any good and it is one with the part number stamped into the end.
All of the others have no number.

Thanks Trev, it was worth a try. Looks like I'll have to bite the bullet and get it re-profiled if I can't find a good used one.

Jack,
The followers are usually buggered as well.
Might be a good idea to get everything nitrided.

I have used Newman Cams to make a new 67-695 cam for my long stroke A7 and was really impressed with the quality. They also hardended the NOS cam followers I had to match the hardness of the new cam.

I would recommend that you speak directly to David at Newman Cams as they charged me a lot less than Draganfly charge for a exchange one though I had to wait a few weeks for it.

Sixfingerjack,

I know a local guy who can reprofile cams and cam-followers at a very reasonable price.  I pass the old ones to him at Scorton Autojumble and get them back a month later, again at Scorton.

Send me a PM if you think I can help.

I'm from Teesside.
