Aussie tin
« on: 10.01. 2011 12:36 »
Gday,
Does anyone know who makes a good quality repo plunger chain guard in Australia.
I've heard Modaks are rough, expensive and don't fit.
I saw a sample of Cob's at a swap meet last year. Looked ok but had been bouncing around his table for too long.
I've been told to stay away from Overland.
A member of the vintage bike club gave 'Vintage Tin' in South Australia a rap.
A mystery man in Melbourne called Bert is supposed to be good.
I've talked to a few people who have bought repo's and no one seems totally happy.
Any recommendations??

or can someone sell me the real deal.
cheers

Q. What do you call a world class Australian cricketer?........

Olev,
The guards that you saw on Cob's stand was most likely made by Henry McDonnell in Victoria.
I have a fair bit of stuff made by him, some needs a bit of fettling but by and large is good quality.
If you go direct to Henry you will pay much less than the dealer price.

Thanks Trev,
He (Henry McDonnell) doesn't respond to a google.
Can you send me some contact details.

The way things are going up here I'd be better off ordering a boat off him.
cheers

Heard the one about the English cricketer who was stopped by Australian immigration officers at Sydney airport?
They asked him if he had a criminal record. He replied: "I didn't know it was still necessary."

Olev I bought a couple of guards of "Vintage Tin" here is SA and they are very poor quality, one I was able to use the other went in the bin.

I ended up getting the guard I wanted from Adam Higgins (03 51483207) in Vic, it was very good and I would recommend his tinware. I have spoken to Henry and am in the process of getting stuff from him, havent seen his work yet but he is very friendly. Adam mainly does mudguards and Henry chainguards and toolboxes etc.

Maybe I am not fussy enough. But I bought one from Modak and it was perfect. Have attached a photo of the bike at that stage of restoration.

If you dont mind paying in funny money try Alan Wakefield in Napier NZ - +64 6 835 4052.
I recently got a rigid guard off him for $80 nzd +post. He does toolboxes, chainguards and rabbit ears
A good rider periodically checks all nuts and bolts with a spanner to see that they are tight - Instruction Manual for BSA B series, p46, para 2.

Thanks mate/
I'll keep Alan's details and check him out sometime.
I ordered one from Henry.
I thought Gavins from Modak looked schmicko as well.
I get a bit of stuff from Classic Spares in NZ.
not enough obviously .. they didn't send me a calendar this year.
cheers
