oil seal position

Hi chaps,

Just assembling my bottom half now, ive got all my machined bits back from SRM (jeez arnt these motors getting pricy to put together!trouble is once youve done one thing properly you think ill better do such and such as ive gone so far ,and so on and so on) sorry i digress, the oil seal on the drive side crank case, which they supplied, is quite shallow and if driven in till it bottoms out, its well below the surface of the crankcase face.You can see where someone has lightly punched around the seal previously in a couple of places so it must of been flush then.So was it a deeper seal, or not driven in so far?

HI Spyke,
The seal outer should be flush with the outer of the crankcase !!
They all seem to have old punch marks around the periphery??
I'm presuming this was done at the factory??  but I have never seen a seal fall out
I do not put more punch masks on the cases (heathen practice!!!!)

thanks john,
 but to clarify do i just drive till flush and leave the gap behind or is my seal too shallow

There will be a gap behind the seal when fitted
Use something large and flat to make sure the seal is in square!!

Why not machine a spacer up to fill the gap? much better positive location. (I, who has a lathe)!

ta wilko , sounds sensible ,ive got a lathe will give it a go, or some loctite retainer.

There is nothing to stop the spacer or seal getting tangled up in the main bearing *eek* *eek*

As John says, leave it alone! The seal you have is the same as the factory fitted with nothing behind it.
There is a sleeve on the crankshaft which contacts the seal and is hard against the main bearing.
There is no point in filling that space.
