6 Volt horn wanted
« on: 01.09. 2010 09:17 »
I have a modern horn on the A7 but would like to fit an Altette.
I recently unearthed an old Altette which I stripped down and got working.

As I stripped the paint to bare metal I discovered it's a 12volt one (presumably off my ex Army B40 from years ago)

Has anyone got an old 6 volt one they might like to swap ?

Pete, sorry no surplus Altettes here. But Taff offers a rewinding service, he can modify your 12V coil to 6V.

You could always keep the Alette as a showpiece on the bike and use a cheapo 6V horn hidden somewhere.
When I rebuilt my A10 a bought an expensive Alette which worked (barely) and then went silent after a few months. I kept it on the bike because it looks good, but have a £4 japanese horn hidden under the seat to pass the MOT.

What a good idea, I might just go for that !

It is possible to fit a small cheapo horn inside the Altette - you may have to grind out the inside a bit to make it fit. I read it during a google search for Altette but unfortunately did not bookmark it. You can get 6v or 12v replicas for about £70 which is what I went for in the end. Taff the Horn can supply genuine refurbed Altettes or refurb yours but you will need deep pockets.

I looked at Taff's site and deep pockets is true enough. Funny but spending £150 on a speedo refurb didn't worry me where £70 - £120 on a horn seems ridiculous especially when the reason is about little else but aesthetics. My bike isn't standard in many respects so why should a japanese hooter worry me ?
I'll check out the possibility of a graft into the Altette body though.

Just put the cheapo under the seat. Save yourself the hassle.

I agree with Alan, put the cheapie under the seat, don't butcher the Altette!
