TLS Brake Shoe Question

Yes I know that the TLS subject has been discussed at length in the passed, but I have read through ALL of the Threads and cannot find an answer to my question.

On my 1962 A10 Golf Flash it has a 7" Full Width SLS Front Brake fitted by the previous owner. Yes I suspect the original was an 8" brake, don't know why it was changed. The drum looks to be New and fitted into a New SS 19" Rims by Central Wheels. Now I have a complete 7" TLS Brake, which originated from a 1968 T100, which I would like to use.

Question: The shoe lining width on the TLS is 38mm, the brake surface on my Full Width Hub is 30mm +/- 1mm. Can I get a shoe, which has a lining width of 28mm/1.125" to fit a 7" TLS Brake? If so, can anyone point me in the right direction please?

I have had some suggestions, that I could remove 10mm off the width of the lining *work* but that seems like a botched engineering solution. I have attached photos of my 7" Full Width Hub and the 7" TLS Shoe Lining, showing the brake hub marks.

If it were mine I would stop. A 7" is always going to struggle (yes I know about Vincents but that's different) and it will always look small.  I've no idea what the PO was thinking, perhaps they were a mate of the guy who built my engine with mismatched cases and a 1/8 compression plate.  Point is is its throwing good money after bad and will forever annoy you.
Get an 8" hub and swap the rim over and have a brake and rim that match.  The test I apply is the one I was taught in the Civil Service: "can I explain why I did it to a Court when its all gone pear-shaped" ?  8" half width - yes, 8 " Full-width and SLS - yes, Any 8" and TLS - yes.  But a 62 GF and a 7" with a modified TLS, tricky...

Good advice, thanks. Looks like I’m looking for an 8” FW Hub, as it happens I have a very good 8” brake plate assembly  *smile*

Terry , I love your positive attitude - 7" no good I'll sort an 8" one and someone will need a 7" won't they ... great !! *smile*

I reckon its a B40 front wheel, 7" Full width hub.  Odd that its ended up on an A10.
Many years ago i had a B40 SS90, not one of my favourite bikes. I don't recall the front brake being much use, certainly not as good as the 8" half width.

You’re probably right, it also looks very much like a C15. I’m surprised, because the previous owner spent an exorbitant amount of money on her and both wheels were build by Central Wheels, it’s a wonder they didn’t question it :!

While we’re still on the subject, do you think an 8” Single Sided brake would fit? I have one on my 55 Shooting Star and it would give a TLS a run for its money *smile*

The full width hubs use a plain spindle into clamps on the forks and the 8" single sided uses a threaded spindle but there are probably work arounds.  Mine has the A65 TLS but that means getting the brake plate build up with weld - and not as the PO did on mine with a spacer behind the bearing to shove the wheel over and leave the brake plate held on by a single thread *pull hair out*

The 7 inch full width iron hubs were used on the standard A7 twins 1958 until end of production.

The same hub but with an 18 inch rim was used on B40 and the early A50. Spindle shorter on the B40.
