Honda civic diesel steering rack
« on: 03.12. 2024 11:57 »
Hi All,
The Mrs. Honda civic diesel developed a notchy feeling in the steering rack a short while back. I got a secondhand rack from a breakers for less than €200 and went to my friends place to use his lift to work on the car.
Loosen off and drop the rear of the subframe to make room and it was relatively straight forward to change it out. I brought the old rack home and stripped it down to see what had failed?  The only issue I could find was that the grease on the gear teeth had dried out so metal to metal contact. Then I spotted  a 5mm screw where grease could be added without any dismantling *ex* Bugger *ex*
I'll know what to do if the used one gets notchy...
The car has 264000 km on it 2.2 diesel
It has been fantastically reliable

Had the same symptoms on a Vauxhall many years ago, and paid the local Vauxhall spares stockist good money (£45 at the time) for a new rack.
Took the old one apart to see why and found a little metric bearing at the base of the pinion was failing....it would have cost nothing to repair it as we had some in the stores at work.. *eek*
