Electric start to alternator model

Has anyone with an alternator A or B model fitted an alternator from Steve Mcfarlane to there bike? If so how easy was it and was it worth the hassle. I am asking as my knee is nackered and thinking of fitting one but don't know whether to try myself or get him to fit it for me. I am quite capable of all types of mechanical work but so far I have not heard of any alternator models having one fitted.

Have a read down this thread off the BSAOC from Jan. Seems the alternator conversion is not such a good idea.  I don't know either way, I read the thread to find out who Steve MacFarlane was!

Hi All,
I'm pretty sure Steve's own A10 is an alternator bike?
On a mag A10 the cush drive spring has to be shimmed to reduce the "kick back" from the cush spring. Not an issue on the alternator engine

Hi Again,
Having read the articles on the link and the authors adventures?,, with a B33 / goldie
The problems encountered were all to do with the chain drive  starter as used on the BSA singles  NOT the gear drive Mc Farlane starter on the twin cylinder A7 / 10..

The Mc Farlane starter on my SR is working great, much better than it's owner *dunno2*
I'm hoping a week here in Portugal will speed up my recovery from recent health issues
