Insurance and rebuilding
« on: 13.08. 2024 10:33 »
I've just completed an engine rebuild and the bike is now complete and running again.

But one thing was on the back of my mind while rebuilding the engine. What would happen if the bike was stolen from my Garage minus the engine or engine minus the frame ect.
How would the insurance deal with this type of claim?

I guessing the bike is only insured if it is complete.

I have motorcycle parts, to the value of ££££, listed on the household policy. If the bike has a V5, it is a bike and should be insured under your motor vehicle policy.

As someone who works in the insurance field (although little general brh  ie household and vehicles ) I'd tend to agree but the reason little appetite for in GB ins , cos the bugger's do change rules as individual companies  so I'd add contact your provider

I'm sure my CN policy has (or at least, had) cover included for bikes dismantled in the garage.

The bike and all its standard ancillary parts are insured under the motor vehicle policy.  So, if you were claiming for two engines and three frames, they'd just say no.  If the vehicle is under repair and the motor was out, it'd still be considered a complete vehicle.  A loss adjuster would probably be sent round to ascertain the details, so if your motor was nicked and not the rest of the bike, they'd probably take that into account when calculating a payout.

likely different everywhere, in Canada I had to get an appraisal done by a certified appraiser that knew absolutely nothing about the bike but that was the only way an insurance company would insure it , many companies wont touch older bikes here ....  usually they haggle the pay out value and you have the option of buying back whatever is left of the bike fairly cheap or you take the full payout value negotiated .

Yep, here in Canada even with agreed value getting the full value for a bike from an insurance company is very much impossible! I have tried and failed to get decent insurance for my project bikes. I have 24+ finished and 45+ projects to go and I can barely get my shop insured for a decent amount let alone all the parts and pieces.
