don't keep it shrouded in secrecy i need to know before it goes on the shaft . i have had my fill with the berglar build and the last problem being a crap not made right front ally mud guard . getting fed up of crap parts that cost a fortune.  *bash* *problem* even bloooming super market shelf prices are anything between 50p and a pound lower than what they charge you at the till. fed up me  *pull hair out*

Feked seem to have the 4 spring basket at a sensible price, obviously after market:

bergs...the answer is that a shroud is all fine and dandy at keeping oil from the clutch, and there is no reason that MWAS could not add one while you wait. Just make sure it does not bind on the driven plate tangs.

These later offerings must be repro parts, (seconds?) and only those in the know are aware of what a difference the shroud makes. If the clutch has "dry linings" it makes sense to limit the amount of oil ingress, and the tapered shroud, as Col notes, is the sensible answer.

Feked offering looks a good compromise pricewise.

You find the original B31/33 4 spring chainwheels were made less a shroud as were some of the original Triumph 4 spring items pre unit chainwheels.

I should add that my bike came with a 6-spring clutch, and the 4-spring shrouded clutch was an aftermarket from Drags I think.

Must admit Julian's comment is maybe the answer, and to add another curved ball, I have  also seen evidence on other sites of clutch outers which are completely solid, with just the slots cut for the tangs. This is a far better way of offering support and a degree of protection from lubricant.

To be honest it can be a minefield so caution is required, it may not be the correct part anyway, despite what the seller claims.

I would always have a shroud and I wonder if the shroud was a later upgrade?  When the plates and basket are new the edges are square but they wear and get a slight angle on the plate and the groove in the basket.  They means the torque pushes the basket out. I recall this on a C11 and it made the clutch very hard to use.  The machined from solid seems the best solution.

Below a light alloy chainwheel, for single row chain, machined from solid. On my A10. Note the holes in the back, so no pretence of keeping oil out but that is not a problem as it does not slip.

With ebay and auto jumble finds of chainwheels and centre drums be aware that the dynamo Triumph twin parts (but not the centre on the gearshaft) also fit the pre unit BSA twins, BUT the original parts designed for the 5T models are more shallow and there is only room for 4 bonded and 5 plain plates. Above the 5T model the parts take 5 bonded and 6 plain like the BSA 4 spring.

Hi All,
Avoid at your peril the cheaper chain wheels, they are made of badly made cheese *ex*
Spend a few more quid and buy the LF Harris made item.

Personally I have not had any problems with clutches without a shroud

Must say I do like Orabanda's Suzuki GS Clutch conversion, it's a terrific clutch.

Thanks for the answers.
It turns out it’s a triumph 4 spring clutch, which explains why I couldn’t find the part numbers
