Late A10 rear brake shoes
« on: 04.03. 2024 12:47 »
What is correct part number 7 Inch Rear, Full Width Cast Iron – 1958-63 A,B brake shoes. Got a pair that would fit if I cut market area so that brake cam will go deeper.
Edit: of course I need to cut from bottom side.

Just had this exact problem, send those shoes back, they are the wrong part.  There is a mistake in the adverts that shows those shoes as fitting the late full width hub.  The ones you need are the fully floating ones that are listed as 7" rear Triumph Trident / Rocket 3.
(But don't rush out just yet, I'll look up what I ordered that fitted)

Yes, the different versions are confusing. I ordered shoes (for the front) of my A and got the wrong wider ones (my fault maybe, but wasn't convinced of that) which were too wide to go on the cam etc etc.
Having no time to re-order the right bits as the bike was going with me to Spain in the van the next day and the old linings had disintegrated, I spent an afternoon on the miller to force the things to fit - they're still in it with new owner - and to make some split cups to increase the width of the pivot post on the non-cam end to suit the larger radius of the wrong bits.

The shoes in the photo look like they are for the 7 inch half width hub brakes. Check the radius at the pivot endmatches your pivot. Not the correct part. I iI would not use them, filed or not.

The best shoes for the 7 inch full width iron hubs are the floating type introduced  for the 1962 Super Rocket and also used on the A65 7 inch full width hubs. These fitv the full width iron hubs from the 1958  FA frame prefix models.

Leading shoe part 68 5515 trailing shoe part 68 5516.

The conical hub OIF rear brake shoes look similar but don't fit as the cam is thicker.

Photo shows the rear brake with floating shoes and service bulletin..

Exactly, I followed that service sheet and found those parts easy to get, and they fit perfectly.  The pivot dia is wrong on the half width shoes, I checked as my first thought was to file them down to fit but I agree, its a no no.

Is it possible to buy the spacers/brackets on the cam side.  I have a problem with the front brake arm angle (too steep) and wondered if the addition of these items would help with brake adjustment.

Yes, I know because I bought a pair with my new rear shoes only to find they come with them *sad2*
These are end caps but not sure of the width:

The caps are the pivot pads which fit at the pivot end of the floating shoe.

The photo shows a Triumph type floating shoe on the left and the BSA type floating shoe mentioned on the service sheet above on the right. It is not unusual to find Triumph shoes (but not the OIF conical type) fitted to BSA full width iron hubs.

This refers to original shoes.
