Picture and question from newbie
« on: 15.09. 2023 16:23 »
Hi all. Here is a picture of my bike (I hope), bought this week. Looking forward to working on it and riding it. Last owned an A10 in about 1975. Puzzled by frame number, engine number and reg certificate. Reg certificate says first registered 01/09/1959, frame no. GA7 143, engine no DA10 7938. This corresponds with the actual numbers on bike itself. However according to reference material Ive looked at Golden Flash frame nos started at GA7 101and engine number at DA10 7801 in 1960. So is it 1959 or 1960 or what? Any help appreciated.

It's both. 1960 Model Spec, built and registered in 1959.The model year ran from August to August, the traditional summer industrial fortnight shutdown being the the time when changes were made for the coming season. So a bike made after the shutdown in mid August 1959 would be a 1960 model Year Spec.

1959 was a good year for bike sales, reckon this one did not hang around in the showroom and could have been only in the dealers' long enough to put the number plates on.

Picture shows the later type frame with a welded in sidecar mounting, plus the later type primary cover with clutch spring access cap.  And a brake light switch typical of a 1970's rice burner.....

 Swarfy.

Hi Swarfy. Brilliant! Thank you so much, that makes perfect sense now you've explained it. I've got a lot to learn.

One of my earliest memories is riding in the sidecar of my dad's A10, must have been about the same time this bike was built.

The brake light switch is on my to do list but a few other things to do first, including fitting a prop stand.

Ha! Snap!
Mine registered 18 Jan 1960. Eng. no. is a little under 2,000 on from yours. Frame 4,000 on. Bike now has a sidecar attached.
I see yours has newer wheel rims.
