Temporary bolt on.  Used it on old thumpers.  More leverage at first to get in motion , less at the end to add speed. Remove when the engine loosens up.

Eh Brandis
I’m smelling what you’re stepping in!.
I use a similar Heath Robinson contraption, fashioned from a kitchen tool.,  on my Beemer to stop the heels of my shoes melting on the silencers.
For me it’s also a more comfortable riding position.
If the shit fits……..wear it  *smiley4*

Looks like a later gearbox cover there....grease nipple and maybe that external nut hidden by the kicker.  Also that lug is threaded (well it was originally) to take the clutch cable adjuster, this comes ready fitted to a new cable.....here it's clearly absent.

I'd suggest a trip to the local cycle store for a proper cotter to replace that shaft grinding nut and bolt, file the flat on the new cotter if required, and fit with the retaining nut to the front of the bike.

I remember back in the late '70s a mate showed me his brothers old Indian V twin and I noticed it had a bicycle pedal on the kickstart lever. At the time I thought it was a modification but it was only about 40 years later I found out they were all like that!

...And mostly still are, although sadly a common-or-garden bike pedal won't fit..
