6046 twin-diesel engines
« on: 26.04. 2023 18:56 »
The production line at the Detroit Diesel plant, making General Motors 6046 twin-diesel engines. These were comprised of two 6-71 inline six two-stroke diesel engines, joined together at a common output. The total power produced by the two engines was around 400 hp. They were used in the M4A2 variant of Sherman and vehicles based on it. https://tankhistoria.com/wwii/sherman-identification/

Next job is to shoehorn it into a bike frame.

My Dad used to drive two stroke diesel coaches, and remembered flames from the exhaust when he was 'pushing on' a bit. *eek* *eek* *eek*

My brother fitted a marine version of the Commer two stroke into his boat during the 70s. 140hp from I think 3litre wasn't bad power then from a diesel. I remember the exhaust noise was excruciatingly loud.

Hated having to work on Detroits - turbocharged AND supercharged not a great combination. Very noisy, uneconomical and not overly reliable, especially the V8's. The governor mechanism of the latter looked like something rejected by meccano. On boats, not for nothing did a pair of ear muffs hang outside the engine room door.
