Plunger hubs have two threaded bearing retaining rings, (one each side)  plus a raised centre to the right side bearing cover.

S/A hubs have only one threaded retainer (sprocket side), right side bearing cover is flatter.

A50/A65 hubs have provision to mount the speedo drive on the right hand side.

Wheel bearings are the same for all hubs. Drum/Sprocket bearings differ.

Spline drive from the sprocket centre is common to all.

Good information and cleared a couple of things up for me

My 1955 S/A has a QD hub threaded on both sides fitted and the other couple of hubs I have are only threaded on one and I didn't know what the difference was, all bolts up ok though

I think there's 3 different bearing sizes in the drums between plunger, swing arm and a50/65 with metric bearings from 1966

That looks like the correct basic plunger type hub. The drum/sprocket is the larger sidecar variant, note the wide groove between the lower edge of the teeth and the edge where the backplate extends to. On a 42 teeth solo sprocket this groove is only 2-3mm wide.

Hub is missing the bearing retaining rings (both LH threads) and  also the bearing support ring 65 5884, listed in the parts catalogue as a thrust washer. This sits on the machined narrow ledge adjacent to the rivets on the sprocket side. Central Bearing Spacer is correct.

A couple of things to consider. The Splines do wear, and the construction is two crinkles pressed onto a central tube, then riveted. The rivets are known to fret  and if you can see that already the central join has been vee'd out (well it should have been) and a bead of weld run in to tie all three bits together. With  the rivets welded and ground off plus a sidecar sprocket my guess is that this hub is already past its best splinewise.

I'd suggest a complete unmolested  hub, or even a poor complete wheel would be a better choice.

Sprockets come with narrower width teeth to suit lower power models in the B and M ranges, often listed as A7/A10 when they are not strictly the right part.

Bearings are imperial races. Service sheet 703 gives cross reference from part number to commercially available sources. The brand names have changed but the bearing ref nos. remain....

Hi Folks

Apologies for dragging this up again, but the devil as they say is in the details.

47 tooth, so not the ideal gearing, but is this a plunger hub / wheel suitable for a '49 or is it the later style?

Seller doesn't seem clear.

Thanks as always.

The speedo drive on my '55 Plunger comes from the gearbox so I do not think that wheel is correct for you.

Also, the drum on mine is not ribbed and it's wider/deeper than that one appears to be.

Ben...  Deffo not the correct wheel. Speedo drive box on the rear spindle was never a feature of the pre unit A and B ranges, they are all driven from the gearbox. Bolt on sprocket is also later, along with a ribbed brake drum. Wheel rim size is also different on many later models, 18" rim used on A50/65, and Unit B and C Ranges. That tyre looks to be a modern profile 18 "size, if my specsavers eyes are working...can make out what looks like the botton of a figure 8.

The hub crinkle pressings are the same as the earlier bikes, as is the central tube internal diameter. If it was the last wheel in the world there is scope for mix'n match, using the correct hub internals and losing the speedo drive. There'll be a lower rear ride height and the rim offset may end up where it shouldn't be, and at the end of the day I'd suggest a continuing search for the correct parts, armed with your updated knowledge. That brake drum won't match up with a plunger or rigid backplate, the ball races and spindle diameters are different sizes.
