site availability
« on: 10.01. 2023 11:28 »
Have noticed recently that maybe 1 in 10 attempts to enter site gets nowhere. Nothing, no 403. Tried going in as guest via google - same. This can last for a while, meanwhile all my other bookmarks are accessible. Is maintenance ongoing with the site, requiring it going off-line for shortish periods? Sometimes one can get in ten minutes later, other times I've had to wait 'till the next day.

Funny you should say that RD - it's been the same chez moi a couple of times. Nothing serious but, as you say, everything else seemed to work  . . . I also assumed a bit of light maintenance or something.

Have seen the same a few times, some problem at the hosting company, nothing to be done but to try again later.

I've had the same issue. I just left it for a while and tried again. It's no biggy.

Encountering loading problems on any site (even banks and newspapers go offline) I check with https://downforeveryoneorjustme.com/

A postitive = nothing wrong on my side, just take a break and try later.

As for the mysterious 403's, not seen any for a while, but the hosting techs are scratching their heads, so may still happen. But you know the drill, usually it's duration is in seconds only.

G'day Fellas.
The only bug I have had lately is on one occasion the like button wasn't there. I came back a short while latter and it re-appeared.
Cheers

^^^

The likes, it use a small extra bit of script (a socalled Google api, used for web apps), and loads from a different location than the forum itself.

Which explains why the forum may work and the likes part sometimes being delayed or unavailable.

With adblocks, tracking blockers, Noscript etc, the script for the likes may be blocked. It's safe to allow it, Google may harvest an anonymous entry about someone somewhere used their api, but they harvest 100.000's times more info about anyone through 10.000's much more effective channels.
