SRM Clutch Plates Sticking

Just installed a 4 spring SRM clutch in my 1955 A7SS and I am finding that the clutch plates will not release. The plates both driven and plain are a tight fit. I have assembled the clutch with a very light coating of oil and removed any burrs from the metal plates. But when operating the clutch it's permanently dragging and not releasing, regardless of adjustment. I'm thinking that the plates, especially the plain need work done on them to make them a more sloppier fit. Anybody had the same experience?

Morning, I inherited this clutch, therefore I have no history, it looks to be almost new. The metal plates had signs of wear with minor tags on and are a snug fit into the clutch centre. I have shortened the clutch rod as recommended by SRM and installed new springs. But I have set the pressure plate up with a clock, but the plates do not release and at best I can get them to just slip kicking her over at speed. I’m thinking that the plain plates or the slots in the centre need looking at.

Only you can tell whether it’s the centre or  the basket slots that are tight.

If it’s only the plain plates (or some of them), then it won’t cost all that much to try other ones.

does it push the plates out freely if you take the spring tension off and push against them with your fingers ? Maybe the pushrod didnt need shortening ? take the plates out and refit 1 at a time see which are tight? just a thought.

I’ve just stripped the clutch down and the plates are not original SRM. They look like replacements and they are a very snug fit.

Ok Guy’s problem resolved😇

Basically I dressed all the pressure plates to a better fit and re-adjusted the clutch and Bingo it works fine with the engine stationary. Further work required in other areas and then road test.👍
