clutch bearings

Hi, As you have realised from my other posts I'm having trouble fitting the clutch centre inside the chainwheel, at first when I tightened up the centre bolt I could hardly move the centre, I found out on dismantling again that there was only 19 bearings, so having received a new set this morning put it together, now when its tight its too loose the centre is baggy and there is sideways movement, I've just checked the new bearings against the old and they are different lengths, with the old ones in position they have been running hard on there flat ends hence the tightening up, whilst the new ones have a gap when the centre is on the shoulder of the adapter, which set are right?

Thanks Richie great help, I put the adapter, chainwheel and centre on all tightened up, the centre moves nicely now, and the chainwheel also with a bit of movement if you pull with one hand and push with the other but within limits I think, then put chain on and now when you turn it over the chain cycles from tight to loose!!!!!! I've just put a new chainwheel from SRM and the chain has done under 500 miles,have I not adjusted something right or what???

Tone, that sounds like a stretched chain, which could happen in 500 miles if it was too tight?  Also, before you put the chain on, did you spin the clutch to see if it ran true? the clutch adaptor may not be sat on the shaft true, due to the key not fitting right, or worse, a bent g/box shaft?
 That`s all i can think of right now, as i doubt your new chainwheel is running out, being from SRM. Maybe someone else has a suggestion?

My first move would be to secure a piece of wire somewhere, put the tip at the chainwheel, and rotate to evaluate how much it's off at maximum.

Hi A10 and all,
To check if the gearbox shaft/ clutch centre  is running true
pull in the clutch and kick over the gearbox while watching the chain tension
(ie without the engine turning over) if the tension varies this means the shaft/centre is not running true

The chainwheel is very slightly out when spun, if it is the chain stretched wouldn't it just be all loose? not tight and then about 1/2 to 5/8 play?

Hi Tone,
Try what I said in my previous post, turn the gearbox over with the clutch pulled in and watch the chain!!
Also pull in the clutch when the chain is at the tight spot, if the chain goes slack then the play is in the clutch bearing

i doubt your new chainwheel is running out, being from SRM.
