Hi. I'm looking for a low numbered pair of crankcases or complete/incomplete engine to build up and fit to my very early swinging arm A10. Around 'CA10.250' would be great but anything with 3 digits (below 1000) would be good. If you have anything languishing in the garage that could be spared, please drop me a line. Thanks.

Hi John O R. Thanks for the message, however, I have already been in contact with Owens. They were very helpful and searched through the 40ish crankcases that they have, but nothing close to the numbers I want.  I'll still keep searching, somethings bound to turn up sometime/somewhere. Thanks again. Peter

I was just re-reading this and a thought occured to me, are you trying to find a set of cases with a number close to your frame number? You may know already but the engine and frame numbers on these bikes do not match. I take it you have a 54' s/arm frame with a frame number between CA7-101 and CA7-7000. If this is the case you need a engine number between CA10-101 and CA10-4500. This will give you a frame and engine built in 1954.
The other alternative is to contact the BSAOC and find out the number of the engine that was originally fitted to your frame. Even if you find a set of cases that are numbered close to the original set you are probably no better off. If you dont have the original cases which I assume you havent then any set from 54' is as good as it can get as far as originality.

Hello to all who have responded. Firstly, thanks to Richard who recommended contacting Andy at Leigh classics, which I have done and found him very helpful. He's had a look, but does not have a pair with a number below 1000 and also, with the global downturn he now only feels able to offer a RGS if the recommendation leads to a sale, sorry about that, I did think about offering him £50 for one just to help him out a bit!  Thanks also to Brian with his advice.       I purchased this project bike as an early A7 Shooting-star, I had tried to get a confirmation of the frame/engine numbers from the BSAOC here in the UK, but as it takes a couple of weeks! I had already gone ahead and bought the bike. When the confirmation finally came through, it turned out to have started its life as a standard A10, which is how I am rebuilding it. The original engine number was  'CA10.246' making it amongst the first 150 swinging arm A10's made, so I felt finding it an early numbered crankcase would be nice. If, for any reason this proves to be impossible, I will just use the lowest number I have found so far. I do realise it will never be quite as good as the original number.
Thanks also to the people who have alerted me to crankcases on ebay.
Any other leads/recommendations greatly appreciated.  Thanks, Peter

Hi Spannersc,
I've been biting my lip wondering if I should mention this, but anyway something good might come of this.

I assume you are in England?

I have a matched pair of cases "CA10 151".

The LH half appears to have thrown a rod, but has been repaired.

The scavenge pump pick-up in the RH side wobbles (with difficulty); the aluminium boss it fits into has a crack; this can be repaired.

I am not sure if you would want this set or their value (I am also unsure if I wish to part with them, wasn't planning on it, but they are just a spare set at the moment).

I have no idea what shipping would cost.

Let me know if you are interested.

Richard
