Kickstart quadrant
« on: 17.03. 2022 22:03 »
Your kickstart quadrant looks OK and is the "flat top" type. Your pinion looks very worn. I'd replace that and the bush it runs on. If you can't find a flat top pinion you will need to change both pinion and quadrant to "pointy top".

Concrete info plus stocked items seem a bit hard to come by. Here are two different A7 / A10 pinions off the Bay. If logic is followed, I'm guessing the one that shows lighter in it's photograph is the one I'm after?

Both are specifically identified as A7 / A10 kickstarter pinions.

Thanks, Poppy

G'day Poppy.
Just be careful. There was a batch of new pinions that had an ID a bit too big and needed a bush to match DAMHIK!
Cheers

Hi Peeps

Trying to ask the sellers whether they know for sure that the parts fit, not getting clear answers.

This seller has really confused me, can anyone confirm or deny what he / she is saying?

Pictures are from the seller.

"Hello attached photos of item along side a genuine one I've not seen any different ones only the one from the early plunger box which has smaller hole thanks"

I'm out and about so will check my gearbox when I get back, but the seller has sent these two images to show what gearbox the pinion would or would not fit.

Hi Poppy, your last pic (0199) shows exactly the condition that I have with the new pinion C&D sent me (some years back!) and is clearly wrong wrt the "sliding engagement angle" and I decided to reuse my old pinion which was (still) a better engagement than this.
It was too late for me to query/question them when I realised this so I'd be interested in what you end up finding out...

A quick look at Draganfly's  Online Parts Catalogue shows the 4 Speed boxes on A,B and C Series share a common basic layout, but parts have differences and C range 4 speed parts are sometimes offered as A range for the unwary. Early longstroke quadrant, ratchet, bush and pinion change for 1950/51 or thereabouts (I'd guess this is Poppy's box) and change again for 1953/54 with the intro of the S/A box.

The mainshaft diameter at the pinion is common across all models, so as a complete ensemble all the parts will interchange as a group. As you've found, some sellers haven't a clue. Gearbox pictured with an "X" is from another range   (B & M 1950 on rigid/plunger ?) so no good at all.

For starters, the Internal Diameter of the offered pinion will confirm whether it fits your existing bush. For comparison a flat top pinion to hand measures 15/16" ID, the pinion bush is a nice sliding fit. As far as I can see this bush is not included in Service Sheet 702 Gearbox Bushes. Source of this used bush is unknown, but fits fine with the rest of my mix'n'match bits. Mainshaft diameter is 3/4" at the bush/bearing position.
