Poppy's Bitsa - What IS this gas tank?
« on: 26.02. 2022 19:08 »
Hi Folks

Anyone have ideas on what this gas tank is from?

@Sluggo has suggested it's a period aftermarket accessory and is going to send photos.

In the meantime, any other suggestions?

Paint line which may or may not be original is visible in some of the images.

The full tear down / sort out / build up will be documented here:

sean...The gas cap is of the sort used on the majority of British Two Stroke bikes. The wording around the edge are the brand names of the oils we remember from a long time ago. The cap has a cylindrical  "cup" underneath, "the measure" which the rider filled with his favorite lube and added to the gas, in the proportion stamped on the cap. The gallon refers to the imperial quantity.  That it fits the tank is a more of a coincidence.....

 Swarfy.

The measuring cup has previously been removed.

I included it because although it may just be a coincidental fit, the size does point to it being from a period light weight or of course a period custom fitment.

I had one of the caps on a francis barnett  is the reason I asked yes it had the oil measure tube   but the tank looks like a Japanese  the british tanks hid the seams the japanese like the flange type joints ....ugly but easier to make
