How to get clutch pressure plate off!
« on: 17.11. 2021 12:04 »
Hi knowledgeable people ..

As the title suggests I am trying to remove the clutch plate on my 1959 A10. It's a 4 spring clutch. I got two of the springs off no problem, but the other two just try and unwind the spring and snap back into position. Is there a technique to freeing the nuts from the spring or is it brute force? I am using a purpose built spring removal tool.

My intention is to fit the SRM billet clutch plate and needle roller thing.

Cheers

Hi Jeff. Sounds like the bolt that passes through the clutch chainwheel is turning? I have had this problem and have tried glue to fix it when i did get the beggar off. Wish i could remember how i did do it to help you now. May have to compress the spring to tension the bolt a bit. If you have never fitted that nut before it could be the PO has used glue to fix the nut so may be worth trying some heat first to break the bond?

Almost certainly the end of the spring winding is catching on the raised part of the clutch nut, it is designed that way to stop the nut coming undone in use.

You need to slightly compress the spring so that the nut no longer catches on the spring. You could try a thin screw driver blade or slide another thin blade between nut and spring.

Often the raised bit on the nut has worn away or been filed away to make the job easier.
