I'm quite certain there was no inner race movement due to increased cush-nut torque. That could happen had I not thoroughly compressed the shim stack when assembling, but, thanks to Musky's advice, setting the inner race and shim stack was done by clamping with the cush nut while the Loctite set.

Not really expecting anyone to be paying attention to this anymore, but, for the record, finally got the covers back on and went for a test ride yesterday. Glad to report that all of the clacky slippage was fixed by the replacement of the cush spring. No gearbox problem at all. Went like a gem. It's not the first time I've pondered if this is was what it felt like just out of the showroom.
