In an attempt to cut through my confusion on this topic, I can only presume any difference is from the differing quantities between 'initial fill' and 'refill' as, with the latter, there's bound to be a fair bit less required due to oil lurking in various crevices. For example a new engine rebuild may require a gallon of oil but, come oil change time, six pints will most likely bring it back to full mark.

Hi RD,
Yes my quest was to find out how much was still lurking in the chaincase after a complete drain. Measured about 40-45mls.

The thickness of the gasket also makes a big difference with the small amount of oil.
The actual level is not important .
I always use the level bolt and fill with a squeeze bottle ( old fork oil )

I think it's good to delve into the depths of 'routine maintenance' and debate it, we all have to do it (or should do) and then it's on record for those who are new to our A7s and A10s to read it in the future.
