Plunger gearbox footscrew spacers?
« on: 17.03. 2021 19:35 »
Hey all,
Well the lump and gearbox are on the bench again, ready for some intimate exploratory spannering.
Just been looking at parts diagrams and can't see any shims or spacers that go between the frame and box. I know that the first time I had it all out, upon putting the lump/box back in the frame there was quite a bit of play at this point which I packed out with some washers. Is this normal and are there specific items for this purpose? The makeshift washer shims seemed to do the job of keeping it all straight and tight ok, but would rather use the correct bits if they exist.
Thank you in advance for wisdom.

Jase   From the factory the gearbox  mounting points on the castings were machined to locate accurately to the frame lugs with no additional spacers being neccessary.

60 years later, vibration, loose fixings etc will have worn away part of the alloy mountings, you can compare what you have with few thousand internet images.

From experience a simple flat spacer under the gearbox takes care of the area. The gearbox mounting point here may require facing off depending on how it has worn to match the frame lug.  You may notice the casting here is slightly different, later examples have more beefed up webs supporting the threads.

Wear can also occur on the top mount, and a spacer must be used here to mount the gearbox with no strain. A gap pulled tight will move that saddle support tube sideways, I found  that out when a rocker box bolt would not pass the frame top tube. In my ignorance I thought the well matched frame lug and gearbox mount were kosher.   Not so, there was 1/4" worn away.

Temporary spacer still there, from 1986.

Thanks Swarfy
When I got the bike there was no nut on the top gbox mount and the bolt was only actually through the gearbox lug, jamming on the frame lug as it was misaligned. When I pulled the lump out for a strip down (last year) I didn't notice any spacers at the bottom mounts, I suppose this goes some way to explaining why the top mount was misaligned, wear and not compensating on earlier rebuilds. With the shims under the box the top mount lined up nice and squarely. Think I'll just repeat what I did last time.
Cheers
