Hi new to the forum.
« on: 26.01. 2021 20:44 »
After following a7a10 and buying a BSA a7 again, it's time to join. My new BSA 1953 a7 is in bits and pieces  - a assembling set. It has been very helpful to read the many interesting topics here on the a7a10 forum.

Svend. That engine looks to have the later wide fin barrel and head. If the engine number is from 1953, it should have a barrel with smaller fins. You may find the previous owner has also added later parts inside, such as high compression pistons and a 356 cam. Both nice to have.

Welcome to the Forum, let us know how you get along.

My bike has the wider fins. Someone told me that if my bike is from 1955 it must have had the top changed. Do you know when they were introduced?

GB.  With the introduction of the S/A Frame and separate gearbox, the early thin fin barrel and head castings on the plunger engine were phased out from this time can share the same parts as on the S/A motor. The issue is down to date of production versus the date of registration, plus of course the amount of existing "old barrel stock" that BSA wanted to shift on plunger engines.

As a theoretical date, 1954 would be the earliest for a wide fin barrel to appear on a plunger, by my reckoning, as this is when the wide fin first appears.

 Swarfy.

Additional. Plunger Crankcase Castings are often found with date stamps. Adjacent to the PRV, under the dynamo cradle, and near or under the primary chain tensioner are the places to look.

Hi all.
It is an engine with wide cylinder and cylinder head. On the engine block is stamped with the date 14-9-53, under the chain tightener.
Disassembled it turns out that it is an A7 cylinder +40. Cylinder head A10, camshaft 67-334, pistons 1:6.7.
My first motorcycle in 1976 was a 1958 A7, over the years converted to the A7 with 67-1101, 2xconcentric 626 and 67-357, but that's a different story.
Then a B31 1953 the most comfortable of my BSA motor bikes, - after some years it was all sold, then to end up with a GS750.
My second acquaintance with BSA an A10 plunger  from 1955, solid and never failed. It was then swapped out with a red LM850 and a red SS900.
