Cant select 3rd or 4th Gear
« on: 29.11. 2020 18:03 »
Please can someone throw some light on this - My recently acquired A10, which i am in the process of evaluating - the back story is that the previous owner among other things rebuilt the engine to a very fine standard, a superb job in fact - there are just 77 miles on the clock, sadly this owner has now passed - Selection of 1st and 2nd gear both up and down is silky smooth be it hot/cold or otherwise, however 3rd gear just doesn't select - pop the pedal down after 2nd and it just feels like it's reached an end stop or when it went into 2nd something has not reset to enable the next selection of 3rd at the next up-shift.
Many thanks in advance, i really appreciate the privilege to be able to ask this question.

it is sometimes necessary to move the selector pawl to one side or the other of the index mark to get all gears working as they should

G'day DJ  *welcome*
Bill's reply is the easiest remedy. If that don't work a selector fork may be bent.
You don't say which moel GF you have. Either plunger or swing arm. There is a difference with the selector mechanisms.

Now get over to Introductions and give us your A7/10 story. What part of the rock are you on?

Many thanks indeed for this information, I will check as stated and let you know - with current work commitments you can time me by a calendar these days for the time it will take me to find the opportunity to have a look - apologies of course as a novice I did not think of adding gearbox type - it's a Swing arm model.
And finally yes, I'll get myself over to the introduction page and give my story this week

DJJ Something simple to check ( before taking the box to pieces) is the camplate plunger. This is inside the cylindrical housing with a large locknut sticking down under the box. The usual setting is with a couple of threads showing, but it is worth putting a clean catch pot under the housing, slackening the locknut and unscrewing the housing completely.

Prepare for a deluge of oil, inside the housing is a hollow  pointed plunger and coil spring, and of course  the plunger should move freely in the housing. The edge of the camplate can be seen through the vacant hole. Too tightly adjusted binds the camplate movement and affects the ease of gear changing, too loose makes the change less positive, as the plunger has a location function with the notched edge of the camplate as well as helping to rotate the camplate to select the gears. Refill the gearbox by removing the inspection plate and level plug on the gearbox outer cover.
