Kick quadrant shaft

G'day Fellas.
Does anyone have a good quadrant shaft to measure. The thickness of the shaft where the cotter pin goes. Mine is 0.540". I have two new kick levers and the cotter nearly goes all the way through and after a few kicks needs to go further. I may need to build up the shaft.

What about making an oversized cotter pin.

Are you using a new kickstart lever? I've had to cut the bottom off before now and weld an old one on because either the shaft hole is too big or the cotter hole is too far off centre of shaft - or both.

Thanks bergs, I thought my shaft was worn (clean thoughts fellas).
Yes RD, both new/newish. The newest one the shaft hole is a little large and I think both have the cotter hole too high.
GB, yes I've tried an o/s cotter pin. Makes very little difference.
With the newish one (only a hundred or so kicks) I've had to use a 20thou shim between the shaft and cotter, hence buying another new one!
Bl@@dy pattern parts  *rant*. They'd be OK if made exactly to the pattern.

G'day Musky.  The pattern ones  *rant* I've  had the misfortune to have anything to do with seem to be made of cheese.
Or they missed the final process, CASE HARDENING!!  The original BSA shafts were hardened.  Maybe if you have the later type that the shaft presses out of the quadrant splines. take the new one to your nearest heat treatment place & see if they can case harden it for you?
Be good to know what its made of though as some steel will & some won't. I suspect the stuff they use is cheap low carbon machinery steel so may be worth a go.
PS  Lithgow guns would have done a lot of that work, maybe they still do.

H Musky the one I'm working on is .748, I think it should be .750 as mine seem to have a bit of wear.

I'd say the shaft i the original 1957 and it does have a bit of wear where the kicker rocks (in & out) when the cotter loosens. I could turn it down and either sleeve it or build up with weld and grind back. That way I can match the dodgy new kicker.

Measured a spare one at .567  No wear marks so looks like a good one

G'day musky,  I thought at first you were talking about the dodgy shafts out there *whistle.  Making a sleeve would probably be the best way to go.  Practice a bit of eccentric turning on the new lathe & make an oversize  cotter pin with a shorter, steeper taper.

Not sure you need more reports on this, but my two without levers on right now are 0.565" and 0.562". It's kinda amazing how close all of these are considering it's not what I'd call a precision piece and it gets a lot of abuse.
