Front FWH, what's wrong
« on: 27.05. 2018 01:43 »
NOS  CORRECT cable. I believe all the parts are correct for the bike.

The cable adjusting lock hits the pivot nut.

Do they all do this Sir?

I could take .030 off the nut, the washer is thin enough already IMO.

I just don't know if they are all this close, or if I have a too short pivot. There is no washer between the pivot and the cover on the inside...... *conf*

Your cable hardware does have an original look (of course, being NOS), but looking at cables from Feked, their locking thumb nuts seem smaller in diameter.

Bugga. Could you take the locking piece off and use a nut (if it will come over the nipple). Oh that sounds naughty.

I thought the guy was full of it, but it even had a little tan slip of paper with the correct part number sealed in the bag.

The ones from feked look different?

Almost a shame the NOS piece had to come out of the bag. That must have been an original factory part. I wonder how long after the model year ('58, right?) they produced repair parts and if they changed details along the way. The Feked part I took as an example is here: https://www.feked.com/front-brake-cable-bsa-a10-42-8732.html . I don't know if it's for your model year. It does try to look original, but it's a bit off.

That rules my thunk out. Clevis end not nipple.

you need  less diameter lock nut, you can get them with a slot for the cable to go through, or find a nut that fits and cut a slot in it

I ended up facing .015 off the pivot nut. That gave me just enough room.

I know what you are saying Richard, and in a perfect world these parts should not be opened. But the packaging BSA used for these parts is far from perfect, there is a slight amount of surface rust on the cable that concerns me.

Plus these NOS parts are still around, but you take a chance on what condition they're in and you're going to pay a price for them. The upside is you know they should fit and if they don't you have to look at everything around them- we just assume stuff from dragonfly and other vendors is not going to fit right out of the package.

"Almost" a shame isn't really a shame. I do believe the parts are better on running bikes than in a bag museum.

I agree, use the NOS stuff...it's not for looking at! Regarding the problem why nut just cut the nipple off, fit a smaller lock-nut and resolder the nipple? Ten minutes tops.
