removing rear wheel A7 ST 1949
« on: 12.11. 2016 19:54 »
I'm planning to remove the rear wheel from my 1949 A7 Star Twin. The sprocket doesn't have the four bolts that connect it to the rear hub found on swing-arm models. Before I take the spindle out and the wheel drops down, do I need to split the chain, or is it normal to drop the wheel and move it forward to unhook the chain from the sprocket?

Many thanks, Peter.

None of the above Peter.

You dont need to touch the chain or the brakes, that all stays in place.

First you need to undo the outer nut on the left side, number 46 in the diagram I've added. You may need to put a screwdriver or small bar through the hole in the head of the axle on the right side to hold it while you undo this nut. Once you have removed the nut pull the axle out from the right side and remove the spacer (no. 26). Now pull the whole wheel towards the right side and it will come off the spline and then you can remove the wheel.

Hi Brian,

Many thanks for your message. I need to take the rear wheel out so that I can check/change the brake shoes. Once the wheel is out, does the brake drum pull off from the shoes, complete with the chain, and then I can remove the shoes having undone bolts 44 & 1?

Regards, Peter.

Peter,
once you have removed the wheel undo the big nut on the left side (no. 45) and the whole sprocket/brake drum assembly will come off. You can undo the joining link in the chain or just lift it out of the way. You will see a plate that goes around where the brake arm fits which goes up to the big nut, if that gives you any trouble to remove you can push the threaded piece the big nut was on inwards, may need to give it a clobber with a soft hammer. Its a short "stub axle" and will move inwards. Once you have removed the whole assembly from the bike the brake plate complete with shoes will lift out.
