Gday All
« on: 24.08. 2016 08:24 »
Hi everyone.

I am 37, from Brissy, QLD (Australia). I have too many project bikes, and much to the displeasure of my wife (see picture), I fell in love with this one and had to have it. I think she is secretly hoping I get this one on the road quickly to take her for a spin in style.

I am currently in research mode, although I have made some purchases already. With the marks on the engine and frame, if I am reading the tables and wiki correctly, the frame and engine could make her a 57 Golden Flash, but most of the rest looks a little frankensteinish . There is a US flag on the rear mudguard, so not sure if she came back from the US, or just owned by an American. She has not been registered in Australia, as it has no compliance plate, or evidence of one. There is evidence of someone attempting to put in their own wiring harness though, but not sure why, as so many other parts are missing.

I haven't decided exactly which direction I will take the rebuild in, but I do like the big chunky mudguards of the Golden Flash

I apologise for my noob questions in advance. I am more of a tinkerer than an experienced bike mechanic, and even though I regularly have to take apart and repair my (Indian made) Enfield, I'm no expert, and have very little knowledge on BSAs.

Cheers

Kaine.

Welcome, you've come to the right place (many 'more of a tinkerer than an experienced bike mechanic' here).
Thanks for the intro post.

G'day mate, welcome here!
Looks like a nice project you have!
Have a look at my bike (10 posts earlier...). It is a '57 Golden Flash, but with a few parts in Road Rocket-Style. If I really bring her back to the original black painting I will probably put on the big mudguards again...

Cheers

Cheers.

Just wondering if there is any significance, ie dating/model with the red resin badge on the tank?

G'day Kaine, welcome.
Nice project there mate.
We have a few members up there in Brisvagas.
The previous owner may have been going for the RGS look with the tank and front wheel.
Cheers

It's a '54 - '57 tank. Anything but Flash but it does the job.

I do like the tank colour, but it needs repainting, so I am thinking I will paint the mudguards and toolboxes the same.

I think I need a little more practice with the search function on the forum.

I have 2 carburettors, the one fitted to my A10 is marked 389/6. I also have a 389/9. I have looked at a few docs (I think one said a 275, and the other a 389/1), and perhaps I am reading them wrong, but I am not sure if these are even the correct carbs.

The A10 still has an Iron head, but the pistons came in a separate box. They are marked Diecut Y.Alloy 724QM, and the other 70M4Q. They look very similar, but are not exactly the same. It looks like one has been drilled, I am guessing to match the weight? Are the markings to do with the weight? and should they ideally match exactly? Also Should I just replace the rings just for the sake of it?

Obviously I am not up to assembling the engine just yet, but would like to know if I have to spend some extra $, as I am trying to keep costs to a minimum. (Ha ha, the best laid plans of mice and men.)
