376 monobloc strainers on taps and new strainer on inlet. Drained the carb at the roadside and removed pilot cap and let some fuel flush as best I could. I hadn't gone to the reserve before I topped the tank I just knew I was getting close. They aren't alot of petrol stations on my way to work so I make sure I have enough to cover a min of 20 miles

I'm more inclined to blame letting it get very low so its picked up the rust flakes.  Remind me, which carb?
Do you still have the strainers on the taps?

No not at all. I'm just saying when I fuel up at my local shell I have issues. If its the additive package doesn't agree with my bike or they have crap in their tanks. At best the filters in the bike will stop bricks if there is fine silt that will bugger the pilot circuit. Modern cars of course have much better fuel filtration they have to for injection

Got the silver single-seater out ready for tomorrow's run to see The Warrington lads. Wired up most of the electrics on the Road Rocket project. Oh how I hate those switch panels on the Goldie type headlights! Why do people who design anything electrical have an obsession with having to make things small and cramped?

Are you implying Shell petrol doesn't meet the relevant BS Standard?

Not sure if I have been hit by the dreaded fuel issues again but due to being very low on fuel, and against my better judgment, I stopped in Shell for fuel. Cue last night less than one day later(in the rain of course) the A7 just pfft stopped. WOULD.NOT.START. Sparks both plugs check, fuel check. Put brand new spare plugs check, not a cough. Flooded the carb, nothing, pulled the plugs not even wet. So that suggests, to me, idle circuit blocked at minimum. Nothing else has changed has been running like a champ for weeks. I even drained the carb as it had been stood in the rain. Plug leads nice and dry and as I said nice sparks. The only change was using Shell again.

Gearbox, Clutch, Primary / Re: layshaft end float when box in frame?

The 67 6203 thrust washers are all the same nominal thickness, though  there is some variation in thickness in the ones I have.

The "T" boxes use a spacer/thrust washer 42 3079 (0.113 - 0.115 inch) between the first gear and the inner cover. There were alternatives 42 3212 (0.120 - 0.122 inch) and 42 3213 (0.127 - 0.129 inch). These washers were also used in the A65 box on the layshaft at the clutch end.

Maybe consider removing the bush flange and using one of these? There is a slight difference in the diameter of the thrust flange on the first gear pinion use on the "T" box and the bushed box.

Cautionary tale - I use an STD T box on my A10 and some years ago, after a strip and reassembly I found engagement of first gear to clunk significantly whilst the other gears work as fine as usual. I used the bike for about 4 weeks to and from work then finally got fed up with the clunk and stripped it out to find that I had left out the thrust washer between first and the inner cover. The pinion had milled the inner cover - see photo - but no other apparent damage. Reassembly with the washer in place removed the clunk. The gears were still fine as usual.

So in my case the lack of the thrust washer only effected first gear selection.

!954 BSA Golden Flash Plunger gearbox
Is anyone able to tell me what the thickness of the main shaft ratcheting mechanism spacer washer should be ?
Also  should a a10 lunger gear box be fitted with a gasket on the inner case of gearbox as mine was not .
