It’s a locomotive.
Sure, now I see it. 'Twas the angle what threw me off. Also, I invented an explanation in my head for a mortar muzzle cover.

That is one of two railway loco's that fell off the deck of the Thistlegorm after it was bombed by a German plane in 194
81. That is the ship that has holds full of wartime motorcycles and trucks just rusting away.

Two things, says the man who thought a locomotive was a mortar, first, it couldn't have been 1948. Second, give me a few, I'll deal with the rust, which doesn't seem as bad as some I've seen.

Thanks, you are right about the date. Finger trouble I guess. I've changed the date.

A bit more than WD40 required.

I wonder if any part of any of those vehicles would still be as good as new. Gearbox internals maybe?
A video of a dive on the ship:

The locos are LMS heavy freight 8F 2-8-0s. 3 were recovered from the Middle East a few years ago where they had remained after hostilities. One is now at the Boness and Kinneil Railway, one is in a museum in Israel and the third has been restored to working order but I can't remember which preserved line it's now on. I'll fetch my anorak on the way out...

Ha! I was going to ask what sort of loco it was, but I just KNEW someone would enlighten us!
Thanks for that BS. We should club together to get you a special new trainspotters's anorak, least we could do.
