Just a quick update for those who have enjoyed my forum absence recently - bad news - I'm back! Been home a couple of weeks now after a hip replacement, so it'll be a couple of weeks more before I can get back to my workshop to continue with the current project - fitting electric start to my A10 GF. I doubt - as does the consultant - that a replacement hip is as strong as the original, so no more kick-starting motorcycles for me ('tis my right hip, sadly). And so once the GF is push-button start, next one on the lift for similar treatment will be my first vee twin. *eek*

Hope your pattern parts are better than some others one reads about - and all strength to the 'leccy leg(s) too.

Welcome back. You will be racing around in no time. My wife has had both hers done in the last 18 months. She was up the next day after each surgery. Driving in one week and off walking stick 2 weeks after each.

Hoping your recovery is quick.
Deb had a hip done a few years back. The butcher broke her femur in the process. Took six weeks to walk un-aided.
Lucky it's my left hip that's buggered so I can still kick'em. The trouble is I can't ride for any distance. The way our public health system and the "covid" backlog is I'll be waiting a while.

Took six months here before I could say I was over it and basically a year before I was not really concious of it.
No problems kicking the A10SR here or even the mighty hoof needed to turn the M23 over.

My op didn't turn out quite the way I wanted ....Was hoping to be out in 3 days as is the norm, but my blood pressure nosedived during / after the op so even sitting on the side of the bed carried the risk of faint / headbutting the floor. Consequently I was in for a further ten days - lying in bed waiting for my BP to return to near normal. Wasn't pleasant either physically or mentally. I tend to sweat a lot, so it only took a couple or three hours before the bed sheet on top of those plastic mattresses was an uncomfortable swamp. *sad2*
As I had become an 'outlier' I was moved from the ward to a single room where, due to staff shortages, one only saw a nurse if one rang the bell. Realising I was in a catch 22 situation (no exercise, no BP improvement) one Monday I asked the surgeon to get me home the following Wednesday - to which he agreed. Once home I could exercise freely and things rapidly started to improve. Now exercising and walking (with crutch) around 500yds per day and BP is back to normal.

Good luck RD, hope it continues and you are back "racing" soon ;) ...a friend of ours came over last weekend and was using a crutch, his comment was "well the hip replacement was a walk in the park compared to this knee replacement", hope that helps *smile* take care,

always great to hear positive out comes even if it takes a few weeks/months. I'm seeing the consultant on Friday to discuss a new right knee, mine,along with a few other things is knackered .Hopefully early next year but have to admit to bricking it slightly as apart from a A&E bluelight apt caused by rearranging the frontend of my A7SS aged 17 on the front of a corpy bus I've never been in hospital before (now 72 in Jan ) keep on getting well,Bob

I have a dodgy right knee but my main problem is my left ankle. Let us know how you get on with your knee. Will you be able to kickstart your bike after the knee has been done?

Great to see you back, good luck with the new mechanical parts that have been fitted, surely of much, much better quality and longlasting than pattern parts for old BSA's :O)

Hi All,
A good friend of mine now in his eighties has had both hips and one shoulder replaced but is still very active and riding his bikes..
When he asked about starting his bikes after getting one of his hips done, the reply was that "a new hip would not affect his thumb"

i ve had a total knee replacement due to arthritus and after around 6 to 8 months recovery kickstarting was and is now no problem. i still would now never own a bike without a kickstart unless it was free.

Good news about the knee 👍
