New Member - 1947 A7

Hi all,

My father has had for a couple of years this 1947 A7 which I thought I would share a picture of.  He has ridden it a few times, but not for a couple of years, I think it is too precious to him now.  From reading on here it appears to be a fairly early A7 with the speedometer in the tank.  Hopefully post a few more pictures once I have them.

Edit: a few more pictures that were taken at the weekend. You will see that there is also the original BSA spares catalogue for the bike and the original owners manual.

Wow #3! Welcome to the forum and thanks for posting the photo of your dad's incredible bike. I definately want to see it in the photo-of-of-the-year competition held here. I can understand your dad's apprehension about putting road wear on her. It really raises a questin about "Ride 'm don't hide'm." In any case he should do with it what makes him happiest. if that's looking at it pristine, great. If it's riding a beautiful time machine, great, as well.

G'day Simon. Thanks for showing us such a beautiful A7. Your dad must be proud, and you of him.
Ask him nicely to teach you how to start it, then work your way up to riding. So he can still enjoy the sound and smell.

Are you able to ride your fathers A7? There is a weekly, (Tuesday evening) mass motorcycle rally at Poole Dorset which cannot be very far from Portsmouth; I'm planning to take my A10 to it some time this year. About 1000 bikes of every kind park up in the harbour area and the best bike wins a prize. I'd have thought your dads bike would stand a chance!

Hi welcome to the forum. I have a couple of 1947 A7s I hope to make one good bike out of the two. The 1947 has different crankcases and timing case to the 1948 onwards longstrokes so they are quite rare. The A7 tank with speedo in it is rare as well. Some more pics would be very welcome.

Sadly for me, the bike brings back unhappy memories. About 35 years ago I swapped a totally knackered, non running, 250cc japanese bike for one of these. Some mates had dragged it out of a municipal rubbish tip! .......Yup!, somebody threw it on the tip
It was complete, black and shiny but the bottom end was very tired, and I couldn't find the parts for it. I've not seen one since, and I was begining to think the memory of the speedo in the tank was a figment of my imagination. Obviously not!!
I ended up selling it for £15.
        Beautifull bike!
