Air filter element
« on: 10.07. 2006 12:00 »
Hello everybody!

Visiting the forum for the first time and like the look of it.

I have a 1960 Gold Flash with a standard amal monobloc carb and the square air filter box.

I'm trying to find a source for a new air filter element - part no. 42-4591.

Can anyone help?

Or, can anyone suggest an alternative air filter that won't affect the performance of the carb?

Hello there Jon!

I had wondered about fitting one of the original box filters as I had recently seen one chromed and it looked smart.  8) Mine is the chromed round one, looks nice but too many about now. Think i'll get an original. Trouble is all the ones I have seen seem expensive, when I was not looking they were two a penny.

As far as filters go.... As no one can see inside the housing, I'd have thought it would be ok to have a piece of half inch foam in there. I dont know what the seating for the filter is like but I'm sure that one could make something up. Let us know how you get on.

P.S... Anyone got a filter in their shed that they dont want?  :P (EmailATLJSwain.co.uk

Thanks for the reply LJ.

I thought about a piece of foam cut to shape.

I also thought I might do the reverse of your plan and fit one of the round chrome filters.  What make do you you use?

Cheers

Jon  :)

I've no idea of the make of my round filter as it came with the bike. When I get back next week I'll take the thing off and have a look inside to see if there are any makers names as such. Although I dont seem to remember that there is. You might just see the filter in one of the photos, in the pictures section.

If you go to this site: http://shop.knfilters.com/KNShop/ProductSelection.aspx?cat=Round+Straight+Universal+Air+Filter
You may find one that will fit, like the HA0300 or the RC1170 when you click on the idem # you get the specs.  I called them and gave 3 1/2 IDX4 1/2 ODX1 1/2 hieght this would work on Wassel that was a no go. My A-10 filter is long gone anyone have one who could post max O.D. min.I.D. max. thickness?

Fido! I have seen the rubber air filter conector mentioned somewhere on the net. It might possibly have been A65bill on the RC forum. Give him an FAO about it. Sure it was mentioned there recently. Could also have been Woodie. The part your needing is available and not too expensive!

the original filter is a metal gauze affair which looks like it would stop gravel only. I have fitted two rubber connectors to my 55 Flash so far and both lasted a very short time when petrol got on them. They were not available from my source last time I checked, but were a waste of money anyway.

The one for my rigid model would be different to the swinging arm type anyway. The old vokes filter looks like it could be quite effective.

The air filter connector pictured is an A7 type.

Hi, carb connection 67-4589 is listed for a10, 67-4596 for a7. Looks very similar on paper in the spare parts manual, maybe only difference is diameter at carb side. BAS lists 67-4589 to fit both a7 & a10.

Hi,
Yes I was only joking about the Swedish, they probably speak much better English than the natives here in Scotland. I've sent them an email asking cost, acceptable forms of payment etc.
